Often, adults have more questions and concerns about gymnastics than kids do. That can make it challenging to sign up for adult tumbling classes near you. People can easily overthink it or let their nerves get the better of them. At Gymnastics of San Antonio, we're guided by the fundamental principle that gymnastics is for everyone and that there is no such thing as "too old to start". Let us walk you through what to expect, so you can make the leap into this amazing activity.

Who Will Be in the Class with You

In our adult classes, there is a wide mix of ages. From the college student who left the sport for a little bit to mature attendees looking to improve their mobility. This means that, no matter your age or what level you're at, there will be others like you. However, you will still likely be put into smaller groups by age to begin with.

What You Will Learn

There's plenty to learn in adult tumbling classes near you. Most will start at the very beginning by building up strength and flexibility. Both are key in gymnastics and a must before moving on to more advanced skills. You'll build the strength needed to support your own body weight and go through active stretching to loosen tight muscles and protect joints from impact.

Once your body is warmed, the coach will move into basic floor skills. You'll start with basic forward rolls, assisted handstands against a wall or with someone holding your legs, and cartwheels if you're ready. This stage will usually take a few or more classes until you can move on.

Now it's time to let your inner acrobat shine. For adults ready for more advanced moves like handsprings and flips, coaches are always on hand to teach and guide you through the movements.

Whether you want to be able to do a cartwheel for the first time or are a prior athlete looking to dust off some old skills, adult tumbling classes give you the space and resources you need.

How Adult Tumbling Classes Benefit Different Ages

"Adult" covers a wide range of ages, and gymnastics benefits each one differently. Here's what different age groups can expect to get out of adult tumbling classes near you.

Young Adults

Tumbling and gymnastics have plenty of advantages for young adults. It helps keep them in shape, can support ongoing skills they learned when younger, and even help them focus as if they are going to college.

Quarterlife

Ever feel like you just missed out on something? Many adults between the ages of 20 and 40 get that sense, or they start to expand their curiosity and want to try out new things. The mind-body connection that's inherent in tumbling makes this a ripe time to join classes. Even parents have said taking up gymnastics has helped them regain a sense of self and keep up with their little ones.

Midlife

Midlife is when a lot of people start having more time on their hands, but they aren't sure what to do. This is also a stage with several body shifts, and people in midlife start to worry about their health. Tumbling helps with the gradual muscle loss and joint stiffness by keeping the body moving without pushing it too hard. It's also a great way to meet new people and expand your social circle.

Seniors

Tumbling might not be the first activity that comes to mind when you think of seniors, but we can't leave them out. While the handsprings and flips might be behind them, tumbling offers a great way to stay mobile and work on things like flexibility and balance.
